Westerly, Rhode Island, home of the Italians, wouldn’t be the same without gelato! Pompelmo Gelateria located at 31 High Street in Westerly is one of my most recent discoveries!
The owners, Melanie Wolf and her husband studied gelato making in Italy and then brought what they learned back to Westerly. Yes that’s right, 18 flavors of homemade gelato made right there in Westerly!
What’s the difference between ice cream and gelato? Gelato has less air in it, less fat, and is slow churned making it dense which makes it creamier than ice cream. In addition, the FDA requires ice cream to have no less than 10% milk fat. Since gelato has less than 10% milk fat it can’t be called ice cream.
At Pompelmo Gelateria you can get your gelato served in a cup or in a homemade waffle cone. They also offer milkshakes, rootbeer floats, affogato’s (one of my favorites) gelato sandwiches, gelato pops, custom gelato cakes, sorbet and Italian espresso drinks. Some of the flavors are gluten-free and vegan so there really is something for everyone!
It’s not easy selecting a flavor. I had to sample 4 before making my final choice. I went with Creme Brûlée in a bambino waffle cone! I’m already thinking about which flavor I’ll get at my next visit; or maybe I’ll get an affogato!
Pompelmo Gelateria is open Tuesday through Sunday from early afternoon until 9:00 pm and Friday and Saturday until 10:00 p.m. Be sure to check out their Facebook page for updated hours of operation.
You can also visit them in Watch Hill where they offer 24 flavors. Be sure to let them know Out and About Allie sent you!
