Providence Waterfires – The Perfect Date Night

For years I’ve wanted to go to Providence to see the Waterfires yet always ruled it out because Providence intimidates us. Too many people. Where do we go? Where do we park? Where do we eat? It’s a city that we’ve not been able to navigate well so when my friend, Cathy, mention going to the waterfires and said she had been before I was in!

Somehow I always end up the one to make the plans but not this time. Cathy threw out a few restaurant suggestions and then decided to stay casual so ate at The Union Station Brewery.

When we got off the highway the brewery was right there. We swung around the block into a parking garage and as we exited the garage we were standing on the patio of the brewery. That was easy!

Pleasantly surprised we beat the crowd and had the option of indoor or outdoor seating. The patio had a cozy park like atmosphere and since it was a beautiful evening, not hot and muggy, we dined outside.

From the minute we arrived to the minute we left the staff were friendly and attentive. The hostess was very welcoming and passionately offered suggestions while seating us. Steve, our server, had a jolly, playful personality that we immediately connected with which made for a happy experience.

The Brewhouse Rum Runner was a fun summer cocktail which seemed to fit the occasion. We had a few issues with our order, however, the food was good and Steve genuinely apologized. When the manager heard, she immediately came to us and did what any good manger should do…she made it better! As I mentioned above, the staff were great!

After dinner we walked around the corner and there, right in front of us, was The Water Place entrance. Not too crowded yet, were were able to walk along side the river and enjoy the scenery. I was amazed at how beautiful it was.  I never knew this area existed in Providence. We found the restaurants that Cathy had mentioned earlier in the week and selected the one we want to go to on our next Waterfire date. Next time we’ll be sure to make a reservation in advance as most of the restaurants were booked weeks in advance.

As we were walking alongside the river a woman invited us into Franchesca’s At Waterplace to see her artwork.  What a gorgeous riverfront venue!  I would love to have an event there someday!

We walked in and saw gorgeous alcohol ink painted artwork.  Cheery, bright, vibrant colored framed artwork, tiles, bags, pillows, etc.  The artist, Christine Desmarais, was so excited to tell us how she created the beautiful pieces using alcohol ink and an air can.  She was a delight to chat with and sent us off with a package of her colorful, fun coasters. How generous!  I’m thinking I want one of her pillows!  Her business name is ArtCDesmarais.  Check her out on Instagram @c_my_art or email her at artcdesmarais@gmail.com.

Time for the lighting of the fires. As we approached the basin of the river music began and could be heard up and down the river.  We secured a spot on a bridge that crossed over the river which provided the perfect spot to enjoy the fires.  Yes, we were surrounded by thousands of people yet romance was in the air. We watched the fires, the entertainers, the tour boat and the gondolas go up and down the river and was fascinated by the teamwork of the volunteers that kept the fires going. What an extraordinary event!

Visit the Providence Waterfire website for more information and the waterfire schedule.

Still early, we decided we wanted a nightcap so I took us to Main Street Coffee, home of my absolute favorite Espresso Martini!  East Greenwich was hopping with mostly young adults and we didn’t care.  I moved my way right up to the bar and managed to score Cathy and I two seats while our handsome dates walked to the other side for a cup of coffee.  You’ve really got to check this place out. Coffee and baked goods on one side and a martini bar on the other.  Someday, I would love to own a business just like Main Street Coffee.

What an incredible evening it was!  The perfect date night!  I look forward to returning and dining at one of the riverside restaurants, possibly Cafe Nuovo.
