It sure has been a cold and damp spring this year but you know what they say? April showers bring May flowers! That’s exactly what happened! Although 3 weeks behind schedule, the tulips are finally here and a trip to Wicked Tulips Flower Farm will surely make you feel like spring has arrived!
Keriann and Jeroen Koeman, were the owners of a certified organic flower bulb company in the US. Jeroen, from Holland, was born into a family of tulipers (is they a word?) When his wife, Keriann, saw the beautiful tulip farms in Holland she knew that’s what she wanted to do so they chased their dream, moved to Rhode Island, leased farm land from Northern RI Conservation District (previously The Dame Farm until the State of RI took it away using eminent domain rights) then started their tulip farm. They later combined their flower bulb company and the tulip farm in 2018 and named it The Wicked Tulips Flower Farm.
The Koeman’s grow bulbs imported from Holland, as well as, their own bulbs making them the only tulip bulb growers on the East Coast. With 5 acres, 600,000 tulips and close to 100 varieties, it’s the largest pick-your-own tulip field in New England.
This year is the 4th season of tulips. The tulips are planted in November, 8″ deep using a fancy machine imported from Holland. They rotate the fields each year to prevent disease. The cold soil has caused the late arrival this year and the opening day was delayed to Monday, April 29th.
